Snow is starting to stack up here in Park City as we all get ready for the Deer Valley Celebrity Ski Classic which marks the first true weekend of ski season! As usual, town is a buzz as the first major storm of the season crushes the Wasatch. We had a decent amount of Fall snow and temperatures were good enough for snow making. However, this current storm is getting us off to an unreal start!
We already have 12″ in the last day and we will probably get another 6″ to 9″ tonight with more snow in the forecast. By the weekend we should have 2 feet+ of new snow. So look for a better than average opening weekend at Deer Valley coupled with Park City and all the other resorts starting to open up more terrain.
Temperatures will remain very cold, so this light dry fluff will hold up into Christmas. The long range forecast looks like there are a few more disturbances backed up in the Pacific…so we hope to have storms rolling into the New Year.

WHAT IS RUNNING OF THE BALLS? You “buy” a ball for $5 or 5 balls for $20. When the balls are released from the top of Main Street (this is cool to watch and happens at 10:45am) they are tracked down their route and the first ball through the shute at the bottom of the will wins it’s owner a valuable prize such as ski passes, lodging vouchers or one of many other great donated prizes. Park City is again lucky to be part of the Tour of Utah bike race this year. The race is held August 6th through 11th and covers 586 miles and 43,621 vertical feet of climbing. The Larry H. Miller Tour of Utah started from the Southern Utah town of Brian Head on Tuesday, August 6th for its ninth run. At nearly 3,000 meters of elevation, Brian Head had the highest elevation start of any race in the US. The elevation and expected heat combined to support the race’s claim that it is America’s toughest stage race.
For the first time in the race’s history, the route began in Southern Utah and headed north toward Salt Lake City. The race will finish at Snowbird Ski Area and Summer resort. Once again, the route of the final stage climbs through the scenic Wolf Creek Ranch, crosses the Heber Valley through Heber City and Midway before winding its way to the base of Empire Pass. This climb should witness another all-out assault by the pure climbers to see who the real King of the Mountains will be in this year’s race. Following a blistering descent down the 11 percent mine road they climbed one day earlier, the race will again finish in front of massive crowds on lower Main Street in Park City.
This race draws lots of visitors to Park City. It’s a great weekend to come to town to enjoy the breezy mountain air and one of the greatest cycling events in the world.
